FIA Joins Vision Zero Discussions at AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s 2025 Safe Mobility Conference
The FIA participated in the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s 2025 Safe Mobility Conference, held in Madison (Winsconsin, USA). Focusing on “Delivering Safe and Reliable Transport System”, the Conference gathered 220 participants and provided a valuable opportunity to explore the U.S. approach to traffic safety and discuss challenges, solutions, and best practices.

Key focus aread included: “Countermeasures and Strategies to Alleviate Dangerous Road User Behaviors”, “Education and Training Needs to Achieve Safe Mobility”, “Efforts from Local Transportation Agencies to Reduce Fatalities”, “Best Practices to protecting Vulnerable Road Users”, and technological solutions for vehicles, attitudes and behaviours.
The FIA, represented by Head of Road Safety Luca Pascotto, joined a panel session looking at “Why is Safe Mobility important?”, with Mayor of the City of Madison Satya Rhodes-Conway, and Secretary of State of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Kristina Boardman.
Discussions emphasised Madison and the State of Wisconsin as best-practice examples in applying the Safe System and Vision Zero approaches to improving road safety, highlighting their innovative and comprehensive efforts to create safer streets for all road users.
Luca Pascotto said, “It is encouraging to see cities like Madison not only embrace the Vision Zero approach to safety, but also demonstrate that it is achievable. These examples show that when policy makers recognise road safety as a public health issue — having a significant impact on healthcare systems and economies — it gains the attention it deserves, and local solutions are identified and implemented. Organisations from both the public and private sectors have a tremendous opportunity to contribute to that.
“For too many years, the focus has been on individuals, but there is now a common understanding that the system as a whole needs to be changed to achieving real progress in road safety. And this can only be done at an organisational level by establishing a framework of rules, regulations, standards, and management practices that gradually improve the entire system.”
During the panel discussion, the FIA brought an international perspective and presented the FIA Road Safety Index as an effective tool to help organisations measure and improve their road safety footprint and promote a new culture of safe mobility.
