The world’s largest gathering of transport ministers and policymakers was the occasion to emphasise the need for more resources to be allocated to road safety programmes around the world in the aftermath of the launch of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund. Invited to give a speech during the opening plenary of the Summit, FIA President Jean Todt, who also serves as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, called on public and private stakeholders attending the meeting to take action and contribute to the Fund. "Every country that succeeded in working its way out of the road safety crisis must now take its share in helping the ones which are still struggling. Every large corporation that stands to benefit from safer global mobility must help make it happen”, he said. The FIA President also underlined the funding challenge during side events hosted by the World Bank and the Union pour la Méditerranée. 

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the FIA, the World Bank and The International Transport Forum (ITF) to establish the first regional Road Safety Observatory in Africa was a high point of the Conference. FIA President Jean Todt, World Bank Senior Director for Transport and Digital Development Jose Luis Irigoyen, and ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim presented this new initiative. They were joined by Morocco’s Vice-Minister of Transport, Mr Mohamed Najib Boulif, whose country has offered to host the Observatory. In Africa, where the rate of road traffic fatalities is the highest in the world, the Observatory will allow better knowledge and best practice sharing between government officials and experts, and help African countries collect, analyse, and share reliable road crash data.

The FIA – through its Road Safety Grant Programme supported by the FIA Foundation – further demonstrated its will to promote greater cooperation between cities in the field of road safety by committing to support the Safer Cities Streets network for three additional years. The network is led by the ITF and was launched in October 2016 at the UN Habitat III Conference in Quito. Announcing this decision, FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility and Tourism Andrew McKellar emphasised the role FIA Clubs play in this network and declared, "Safer Cities Streets is bringing together all the stakeholders, looking at empirical evidence and responding to that. We will continue to support it."

During the three days of the Summit, the FIA showcased its main road safety activities. Participants were welcomed to the venue by sixteen billboards displaying the #3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign. Featuring 14 ambassadors from the sport, music and film industry, the #3500LIVES campaign aims to raise awareness of the 3,500 people who die on the world’s roads every day and promotes universal safety rules to save lives on the road. Since its launch, it has been deployed in more than 75 countries around the globe reaching over 1.5 billion people. On Wednesday, Germany's Federal Minister of Transport & Digital Infrastructure Andreas Scheuer, Latvia's Minister of Transport Uldis Augulis and ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim joined Actress, Producer, Spokesperson for the FIA High Level Panel for Road Safety, UNDP Goodwill Ambassador and #3500LIVES Ambassador Michelle Yeoh and Jean Todt to support the campaign. Michelle Yeoh was also invited to talk about her commitment as a global road safety ambassador during the Thursday afternoon plenary session.

The campaign was also displayed at the FIA booth, along with a presentation of the activities of the FIA High Level Panel for Road Safety (HLP). The HLP gathers decision-makers from the global business community, international institutions and non-governmental organisations to find innovative solutions to address the global road safety challenge. The stand also offered the opportunity to test the FIA/Emotiv #Tech4RoadSafety Experience. Developed  in partnership with the Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle épinière (Brain and Spine Institute), the experience allowed participants to drive a VR simulator while their brainwaves were being monitored and displayed in real-time, helping to better understand how distractions and altered perception can put driver’s and road user’s lives at risk.
