Media presence of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship remains strong

Last weekend, the thrilling and successful 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season was concluded with the grand season finale at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg

In the battle for the FIA Formula 3 European Championship title, Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam) prevailed against his toughest rivals, Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) and Jake Dennis (Prema Powerteam). Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc (Van Amersfoort Racing) secured the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award and Prema Powerteam successfully defended the team title. The FIA Formula 3 European Championship season 2015 is over – enough reason to take a look at this year’s media data.

With its grid featuring more than 30 young and talented drivers, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship stands for thrilling motor racing and on-track action. Enthralling wheel-to-wheel battles thrilled the crowds on-site, the TV audience and the users of different online platforms. This year, the race meetings up to and including the ninth event at Portimão attracted a total crowd of 382,500 visitors who came to witness the performances of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship young guns live on-site. The biggest attendance figure in this period of time – 123,000 spectators – was achieved at Nuremberg’s Norisring, followed by the first appearance of the young drivers at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, in the early stages of the season, which was witnessed by 75,000 visitors.

In 212 counties worldwide, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship action could even be followed without leaving the house. From April to September 2015, the TV coverage added up to nearly 2,200 hours that were watched by more than 150 million viewers. A total of 188 TV stations covered the young-driver series – which last year was the stepping stone straight to Formula 1 for Dutchman Max Verstappen – in more than 5,200 programmes.

Once again moving images could be watched via the free live stream provided by the FIA Formula 3 European Championship’s official website. There, the coverage of all races was accompanied by English commentary. Up to and including Portimão, this service was used by more than 85,000 users. At the same time, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship’s official YouTube channel also proved to be very popular, in the first nine months of the year, with the visitor average amounting to 34,000 users per month. The YouTube channel provides all races in full length as well as short race-weekend reviews – and the Eurosport magazine, solely dedicated to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, also is available there following its first showing on Eurosport.

At the end of September, the race series’ official Facebook site had about 11,000 followers and the Twitter channel featured some 7,000 followers. Both social media platforms are regularly updated with the latest news and information. In addition the official FIA Formula 3 European Championship website provides all important information related to the championship. It is constantly updated with video streams, photos, race reports and results. Since the site was activated in early 2013, it attracted a total of 1.6 million visitors and from January to September 2015 alone it was visited by more than 470,000 users.

Furthermore print media also represents an integral part of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship’s media environment. From January to September 2015, articles on the FIA Formula 3 European championship in the European core markets Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK achieved a total print run of nearly 100 million copies.
