FIA REGION IV SUPPORT THE LAUNCH OF ELECTRIC BUS PILOT PLAN IN THE CITY OF BUENOS AIRES
Sustainable mobility took a step forward in the Argentinian city of Buenos Aires where, two weeks ago, the National Ministry of Transport authorized the testing of electric buses in urban and suburban fleets in order to analyze the viability of their progressive implementation.
The FIA Region IV team, which supports sustainable mobility in Latin America through the management of issues related to awareness, specialization and communication, among others, was present at the launch that took place on May 16 with two electric units, soon to be joined by another six.
The initiative is part of the 2035 Clean Mobility Plan promoted by the government of Buenos Aires. The objective of the Plan is to reduce emissions from the transportation sector by 14% and 50% of pollutants by 2035, as well as to incorporate clean technologies, not only in collectives but also in taxis and light utility vehicles.
For this reason, Pablo Azorín, Head of Road Safety and Environment at FIA Region IV, emphasizes that "these tests are important to know how the units work in the field and to determine the capacities and optimization in the operation, with the objective of reducing emissions from the transportation sector".
The eight buses that will form part of this evaluation are of Chinese origin, with an autonomy of between 70 and 220 kilometers - depending on the technology they possess - and a charging time of between two and five hours. Two other cities in Argentina - Mendoza and Rosario – also launched initiatives of this type.
Diego Cosentino said, “If Buenos Aires had a 100% electric public transport fleet by 2030, 65 tons of CO2 would be reduced, avoiding illnesses and deaths associated with the quality of air”.
Thus, Argentina follows in the footsteps of other countries in the region in terms of zero-emission transport.
