The 13 June 2016 was a special day for the pupils from Dukezong Primary School Shangri-la Yunnan China. They welcomed two distinguished guests, FIA President Mr. Jean Todt, and movie star Michelle Yeoh, to join in the school’s ‘Day of Road Safety’. Mr Todt also serves as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, while Ms Yeoh is a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador.

Dukezong Primary School is one of nine pilot schools participating in a Road Safety Education Project for China, which is supported by the FIA Road Safety Grant Programme through CAMF (Federation of Automobile and Motorcycle Sports of China) and was launched by SISC (Shangri-la Institute for Sustainable Communities) in 2016.

This project is operated by SISC together with teachers from the pilot schools, which involves a series of step-by-step actions including teacher training, development of education resources, road safety classes, supporting students through their own research projects on the subject, and other activities such as the ‘Day of Road Safety’.

Students presented findings from their investigation on local road safety risks and need-to-know rules for road safety, and also demonstrated what they had learnt on the road next to the campus.
