On 19 September 2019, the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), BP and Castrol published their 6th Distractions Report highlighting the misuse of mobile phone in traffic.

Regarding car drivers, the 2019 study shows worrying results. 12% of respondents admitted that they use their mobile phones regularly while driving. The percentage of young drivers (from 18 to 24 years old) doing so is even higher, at 17%. Smartphones are mainly used as GPS (25%), for text messaging (19%), hands-free calls (14%) and email reading (13%). According to the report, approximately 530,000 Spanish drivers acknowledge that they have suffered an accident because of distraction.

Bad driving habits affect also users of Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV) such as scooters and bikes. According to the survey conducted among more than 2,100 users, the use of mobile phones is usually present in 10% of scooter and bicycle drivers. However, the external perception is very different: 51% of respondents have seen PMV users wearing headphones in traffic, 24% talking on the mobile phone without hands-free, and 23% using mobile applications.

To raise awareness of the danger posed by the misuse of the mobile phone in traffic, RACE, BP and Castrol have launched the ‘Turn off and let’s go’ campaign.
