INTERESTING FACTS
The Hockenheimring is located just outside the town of Hockenheim, in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The university city of Heidelberg is only about 20 kilometres away, while nearby larger cities are Frankfurt, about 100 kilometres to the north, and Stuttgart, slightly further and to the southeast.
Opened in May 1932 the original track was only used for a few years before the circuit was fundamentally changed in 1938. The track was modified and converted into its famous oval form and - at the same time - was made wider, so it became a true high-speed circuit.
In 2001, to increase safety and enhance the spectators’ experience, the track was significantly modified. A long, fast curve was built to connect the first and last straights, cutting off the long forest section and reducing the circuit length from nearly seven kilometres to four and a half. New stands increased capacity for spectators to 120,000.
Unlike previous years, this is the only appearance the Hockenheimring makes on the 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship race calendar, however the track has already been used for a two-day test in June this year.
