ANWB launches “Drive Safe to School" project
In the coming months, the ANWB, in collaboration with the Edwin van der Sar Foundation, will provide 13,000 Dutch children between 6 and 8 years old with free bike helmets as part of the project “Drive safe to school”.
The project comes from the collaboration between the ANWB and the Edwin van der Sar Foundation, a foundation that mainly focuses on prevention and revalidation of brain injuries.
Indeed, in 2017 for the first time in history, there were more people injured on their bikes than on their car and one-third of these injuries involved the head or the brain.
Currently, the helmets will be handed out in two of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. The ANWB will measure the helmet use of the children on two different occasions: after one week and after a month.
If it proves to be a success the helmets will be distributed to children all over the Netherlands during Streetwise lessons, the ANWB traffic education programme for children between 4 and 16 years old.
