FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility and Tourism Jacob Bangsgaard promoted the influential FIA Road Safety Index at the TRB Annual Meeting this week.

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting was an opportunity for leading transport experts and researchers to meet and discuss ways to improve transport options and efficiencies around the world.

At the event, Jacob Bangsgaard joined other global stakeholders, including representatives from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), International Road Assessment Program (iRAP), the US’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), for a session entitled ‘Analysis of International Road Safety Data’.

He was also invited to join representatives from the US Department of Transport and Amazon in a panel organised by the FIA Foundation and focusing on ‘Public and Private Sector: Striving for Safe Systems’.

On both occasions, Jacob Bangsgaard presented the Index and how its innovative methodology enables companies and organisations to map and assess their road safety impact, and calculate their safety footprint.

The FIA’s Index has the potential to transform the global road safety space, boosting private sector engagement and helping companies and organisations showcase their safety efforts as part of sustainability reporting. Ultimately, the Road Safety Index aims to significantly reduce road crashes and incidents, benefitting communities’ health, environment, and economy.

Jacob Bangsgaard explained: “By incorporating road safety indicators into sustainability reports, companies and organisations can demonstrate their commitment to a holistic approach to sustainability, one that encompasses not just environmental and social factors but also human safety.  Because it looks at everything from general engagement and procurement policies to practical solutions to control key safety factors, like speed, protecting gears, training, the FIA Road Safety Index offers them the best tool to do so.”
