Raffaele Marciello – ‘Singin’ in the Rain!’
Raffaele Marciello was determined to win his last race in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship – which he did in style. He took the chequered flag in first place followed by the championship runner-up, Felix Rosenqvist.
As the drivers’ title had already been won by Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) and the teams’ award by Prema Powerteam, the last race of the year was just for honor’s sake. All the drivers, though, were determined to shine in the last heat of the year despite the heavy rain.
The start was given behind the safety car and once the pack was unleashed Raffaele Marciello kept Felix Rosenqvist (kftzeiele24 Mücke Motorsport) at bay, throughout the race they were nose to tail. Thus the young Italian finished his season in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship on a high note with victory, his thirteenth of the year! “The last race wasn’t the easiest,” admitted the 2013 FIA European Formula 3 Champion. “The safety car at the start helped me as it prevented Felix from mounting an attack. After that it was just a question of keeping it on the track, which wasn’t easy as the conditions were really on the limit.”
“I’m happy to end with a victory. After clinching the championship yesterday I wanted to finish in style today. I’ve got one more Formula 3 race to win this season, the Macao Grand Prix. I’m not even thinking of next year before clinching the title. Now, we’re going to prepare for 2014 with tests in Formula Renault 3.5 Series and probably in GP2 Series.”
Rosenqvist who finished second can’t wait for the Macao Grand Prix in the hope of adding the FIA F3 International Cup to his results. “It’s a pity we weren’t able to have a standing start, but it’s understandable given the weather conditions,” said the Swede. “We were pretty close to each other throughout the race; it was fun although it began to pour down at half distance. Even on the straight I was on the limit.”
“I can’t wait for the Macao Grand Prix. Last year it went off pretty well as I finished second. I want to win this race to prepare really well for next season. Like Raffaele I’m looking at options in single-seaters, but I’d also like to firm up something with Mercedes-Benz in the DTM.”
Lucas Auer rounded out the final top 3 of the season. Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational) finished fourth in front of Harry Tincknell (Carlin), Antonio Giovinazzi (Double R Racing), Sven Müller (Van Amersfoort), Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam), Jordan King (Carlin) and Michael Lewis (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport).
