Sixty percent of Indonesia’s 31,000 reported road deaths involve motorcycles. To reduce that shocking statistic, police officers from the country’s 33 provinces have joined forces with the FIA’s Action for Road Safety campaign to promote road safety nationwide.

Indonesia’s newest road safety initiative is education-focused, and a key element is educating motorcycle users on the importance of wearing helmets.

This week FIA President Jean Todt joined forces with Nanan Soekarna, Deputy Chief of Indonesian National Police, Police Commissioner General and Sadikin Aksa, Vice President of the IMI (Ikatan Motor Indonesia) to launch the Indonesian arm of the AfRS campaign in a multimedia event that saw Jakarta’s National Police Traffic Centre provide video links to police-sponsored road safety events in all 33 provinces.

At the launch, the FIA president emphasized the importance of reducing road deaths throughout the country. Road safety is not limited to preventing the loss of life – it brings with it economic and social gains that benefit the country as a whole.

Indonesia has set itself the admirable yet ambitious goal of reducing road deaths by fifty percent by the end of the current decade. In addition to educating the country’s road users, the Indonesian police force will promote the FIA’s 10 Golden Rules through good practice. Every Indonesian traffic officer has joined a pledge declaring ‘I am a pioneer of road safety’, with the intention of leading by example.  

With an average one million cars joining Indonesia’s congested roads on an annual basis, road safety and education are becoming ever more important. To that end, the 10 Golden Rules will be communicated to Indonesia’s road users through an advertising campaign stressing the importance of road safety.

The FIA's Acton for Road Safety program supports the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety, which was founded with the aim of saving 5 million lives by 2020.
