Porsche and Audi Battle It Out For First Six Hours at Le Mans

The incident packed first 6-hours saw drama and excitement at every turn of the 14km Le Mans track.

As the race distance reached twenty-five percent the no7 Audi R18 of Benoit Treluyer overtook the no17 Porsche 919 hybrid of Mark Webber to take the lead just before the Frenchman dived into the pits.  The no17 Porsche had taken the lead on the opening lap of the race.  The lead changed hands three times in the last 30 minutes of the sixth hour.

The LMP2 class was equally hard fought with the no47 KCMG Oreca 05-Nissan, which had started on pole position, still out in front with Matt Howson holding a comfortable 70 second leaded over the second Oreca 05 run by the Thiriet by TDS team, driven by Pierre Thiriet.

  • no17 Porsche passes no18 Porsche at Tertre Rouge on lap 1
  • no23 Nissan GT-R LM NISMO still in garage – clutch replaced.  Joins race seven laps down
  • no26 G-Drive Racing Ligier-Nissan moves to second in LMP2 and closes on #47 KCMG Oreca-Nissan on lap 6
  • Stop and Go Penalty for no45 Ibanez Racing Oreca-Nissan for Jump Start
  • No38 Jota Sport Gibson-Nissan pushed back into garage – reported gearbox problem
  • Door open on no21 Nissan G-TR LM Nismo, Jann Mardenborough returns to pits
  • No92 Porsche Team Manthey 911 drops oil at Forza Chicane and catches fire
  • No42 Strakka Racing Strakka Dome S103 hits oil dropped by no92 Porsche, spins and is collected by no13 Rebellion Racing R-One AER.  Rebellion is beached in gravel, Strakka Dome returns to pits
  • Safety Car Period declared to extract no13 from gravel and extinguish no92 fire
  • Alexandre Imperatori, no13 Rebellion Racing R-One AER: "I was in a queue of cars and the Porsche blew its engine right in front of me.  There was oil on the track and there was no time for the marshals to put the warning flags out. The Strakka lost its rear and there was no way for me to avoid him.  Luckily it was just bodywork damage but we are playing catch up now."
  • No31 Tequila Patron ESM Ligier-HPD spins  at Tertre Rouge
  • No28 G-Drive Racing Ligier-Nissan given 1m50s Stop and Go Penalty for speeding in the pitlane
  • 22 Hours, 2 Minutes to Go: Contact between no40 Krohn Racing Ligier-Judd (Tracey Krohn) and no30 Tequila Patron ESM Ligier-HPD (Scott Sharp) at Forza Chicane.  No40 in gravel, slow zone declared
  • 21Hours, 4 Minutes to go: No8 Audi R18 (Loic Duval) spins and hits barriers after clipping a slow moving no51 AF Corse Ferrari just before Indianapolis.  No8 returns to pits for new bodywork while Safety Car deployed to repair barriers
  • Just as the Safety Car was going to be withdrawn the no88 Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing Porsche 911 pulled off the track at the Mulsanne Chicane with fire coming from the back of the car.  Oil dropped on the track so Safety Car was told to stay out.  Safety Car was withdrawn with 20 Hours and 17 Minutes remaining on the clock
  • 19 Hours, 50 Minutes to go: No9 Audi (Filipe Albuquerque) closing on no17 Porsche 919 (Brendon Hartley) for the lead.  Hartley heard saying on the radio that he couldn’t see much because of oil on the windscreen.  No9 closes to 0.35 seconds before heading to pits for scheduled stop
  • No9 Audi R18 (Filipe Albuquerque) sets fastest lap of the race so far – 3m17.647 on lap62 – a new lap record
  • 19 Hours, 8 Minutes to go: no1 front right bodywork damage.  Returns to pits for repairs with 18h53m remaining on clock
  • 18 Hours, 53 Minutes to go: no4 Bykolles CLM AER (Simon Trummer) in the garage with smoke coming from rear of car
  • 18 Hours, 50 minutes to go: No41 Greaves Motorsport Gibson-Nissan (Gary Hirsch) slow on track just after the Dunlop Bridge, pulls off onto grass
  • No9 Audi takes the lead from no17 Porsche briefly before Audi pits.  No17 Porsche regains lead
  • 18 Hours, 8 minutes to go No34 Oak Racing Ligier in the gravel at Indianapolis
  • No9 Audi takes the lead from no17 Porsche briefly before Audi pits
  • No7 Audi take the lead from the no17 Porsche before heading for scheduled pitstop.  No17 regains lead
