After the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans the new FIA World Endurance Drivers Champions in both LMP1 and GTE gave their reactions, along with the LMGTE 24 Hours of Le Mans winners and outgoing GTE World Champions

At the end of 24 hours of racing Kazuki Nakajima, Fernando Alonso and Sebastien Buemi took the unique accolade of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice in one season and becoming the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Champions.

Day light over the La Sarthe circuit and there was more drama out on track. Mechanical issues and race incidents shook things up in LMP1 and LMP2 and the ongoing battle in LMGTE Pro.

During the small hours of Sunday morning the race settled down with no major incidents, with the leaders in each of the four classes maintaining their advantage.

The first three hours of Sunday were anything but uneventful with three safety car interventions for as many incidents.

LMP1 Jose-Maria Lopez (#7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid, Toyota Gazoo Racing) was leading the race but tripped up while braking at Mulsanne and ended up in the gravel. Just behind in the #8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid, Kazuki Nakajima seized his chance and moved out front. In third and fourth place, the #11 and #17 SMP Racing BR Engineering cars are both one lap behind the Japanese cars.

The 87th Edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans started under grey skies but on a dry track. After six hours of racing it was the two Toyotas that held the top two spots. Rain did arrive later in the race, with a light shower providing the competitors with some tricky conditions.

This year again, the mythical race was the occasion for the FIA to raise awareness on road safety and promote the #3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign with the support of famous ambassadors, public authorities and the motor sport community.

New FIA World Endurance Championship season, which starts on Sunday 1st September at Silverstone (GBR), offers strength and diversity in all categories with 33 full season entries for 8-round, multi-continental season 8 of the WEC.

The third and final qualifying session ahead of the 87th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans saw the no7 Toyota Gazoo Racing Toyota TS050 Hybrid capitalise on the pace it had shown in previous sessions to claim pole position for the eighth and final round of the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship Super Season.
