Three World Championships in 2013

Three World Championships will be organised in 2013: one for the KF category (direct-drive karts), one for the KZ category (gearbox karts) and one for Juniors (13-15 years old, according to the KF3 regulations). All these championships will be held over one single Event, the winner of the Final being declared World Champion.

Furthermore, in order to clarify international Karting, the World Cups (for the KZ1, KZ2, KF2 and KF3 categories in 2012) will be deleted so as to enhance better the three World Championships recognised by the CIK-FIA.

A European Championship, held over two Events, will also be organised for the KZ1 and KZ2 categories, as well as for the KF and KF-Junior.

The final calendar of the 2013 season will shortly by finalised and it will receive the final approval of the World Motor Sport Council in December.

Modification of the U18 status and renewal of the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy

While the U18 concept (under 18 years old) will be renewed in 2013, the category will lose its “World Championship” label. A “Nations’ Cup” formula is currently being studied. As for the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy, it will be renewed without any major modification.

An invitation to tender will shortly be issued for the supply of engines (in the U18 category) as well as chassis and engines (for the Academy Trophy).

Three joint Events for the U18 and Academy Trophy should be entered on the 2013 season calendar.

Article 18

The World Motor Sport Council Members discussed Article 18 of the FIA International Sporting Code, which prevents Drivers not old enough to be in the Junior class (13-15 years old) to compete out of the borders of their countries.. A proposal from the International Karting Commission allowing the participation of Drivers from border countries was submitted to the World Council. The latter has asked the Commission to go deeper into the issue and draft a text.

Homologation of KF2 carburettors

In view of reducing costs and homologation constraints, the minimum production number of KF2 carburettors required for a homologation application has been reduced to 50 examples (instead of 150).

KF and KZ tyres

Manufacturers of tyres homologated in the KF and KZ categories must provide a self-certification guaranteeing that the following minimum distances can be covered: 150 km for “Medium” compounds and 250 km for “Hard” ones.

New procedure in the event of a race being stopped

If a race is stopped before the end of the 2nd lap, the first start will be deemed null and void. There will then be a new race on the basis of the initial starting grid and over the originally scheduled distance. This decision will be applied in both the Qualifying Heats and Races of the final phase.
