The FIA Region I Plenary Assembly provided an opportunity for all Region I Clubs to look back on the year gone by and focus on what lies ahead, in particular regarding digital memberships and the future of international travel documents.

On the third day of the FIA Region I Spring Meeting, which was held in Madrid at the kind invitation of the Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE), delegates gathered to attend the FIA Region I Plenary Assembly.

In a busy week of meetings and events, delegates received insights on digital membership from a special panel of Clubs leading in the field of online tools. The session showed successful examples of Clubs that have made great strides in providing online services for members. Speakers at the session were the Automobile & Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates’ (ATCUAE) Director of Strategy Sean O’Connor, the Automóvel Club de Portugal’s (ACP) Director General Commercial and Marketing Luis Palma de Figueiredo, as well as the Österreichischer Automobil-, Motorrad- und Touring Club’s (ÖAMTC) CEO Oliver Schmerold, with FIA Region I’s Director General Laurianne Krid as moderator.

ATCUAE is working on the digitisation of the International Driving Permit (IDP) and Global Carnet de Passages en Douane (CDP). For the CPD, ACTUAE will launch a digital platform entirely dedicated to the product.

In 2019, ACP plans to remodel its website content, making pages that auto generate every time, in response to member preferences. The intention is to make all content more dynamic and personalised, generating tailored content, in order to attract more members to interact with the Club.

Development of an entirely digital membership is the path that ÖAMTC is taking. The Club is working on a platform for full digital interaction with its members. With this tool, the Club will be able to turn everything online – from registration and contracts to services and assistance. Less paper, more efficiency – that is the idea.

During the Plenary Assembly, the Innovation Award winners made their presentations and the overview of the past year was presented in the annual Year in Review video.

Earlier in the week, the first meeting of the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism was held, with FIA Deputy President, Thierry Willemarck in the chair.

The 2019 FIA Region I Spring Meeting will be hosted by AA South Africa.
