A record before the record
In just under a year’s time, the Hakskeen Pan area in South Africa will be the scene of an attempt on the World Land Speed Record. The Bloodhound team will not only try to break the current record, set in 1997, of 763.035 mph (1227.985 km/h,) but also to take it past the 1000 mph barrier.
The area that will be used for the attempt was recently inspected by the President of the FIA Land Speed Records Commission, David Dean, who was interviewed at the time by, SABC TV, South Africa’s public broadcaster. To prepare the terrain as well as possible for the record, the local community of Mier removed by hand 16,000 tons of stones from the bed of the lake, freeing up a surface area of 22 square kilometres, making it the biggest ever area cleaned up for a motor sport activity.
