WEC - Porsche sets the pace on day 1 at the Nurburgring
In the second 90-minute Free Practice session on day one of the 6 Hours of Nurburgring weekend the no1 Porsche 919 Hybrid, driven by Mark Webber, set the fastest time of the day. The Australian lapped the 5.148km circuit in 1m40.997s, 0.7 seconds faster than the best time set in Free Practice 1 by Marc Lieb in the no2 Porsche 919.
There was drama early in the session when the title leading No.2 Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Romain Dumas crashed at Turn One and had to sit out the majority of the session, finishing P5 on the timing sheets.
Marcel Fassler was P2 with time of 1,41.011s in no7 Audi R18 and just 0.014s behind the leading Porsche. The no8 Audi driven by Oliver Jarvis places P3 ahead of the no.6 Toyota TS050 HYBRID driven by Stephane Sarrazin. The top five cars in LMP1 are covered by less than a second.
The close fight in LMP1 Privateer class continued as the no4 ByKolles CLM split the two Rebellion Racing cars, with the no.13 R-One-AER of Matteo Tusher finishing in front, just 0.6 seconds to the Bykolles car driven by Pierre Kaffer.
After Alex Brundle topped the times in Free Practice 1, G-Drive Racing topped the LMP2 times again as Rene Rast puts the Russian entered Oreca-Nissan clear of opposition by one second. Strakka Racing continue strong start to weekend with second in LMP2 with impressive rookie Lewis Williamson, with Roberto Merhi setting the third best time in no45 Manor Oreca-Nissan.
Aston Martin Racing lead LMGTE Pro as no97 Vantage of Richie Stanaway finished ahead of the No.51 AF Corse Ferrari 488GTE with a lap time of 1m56.908, just 0.064s ahead of Gimmi Bruni’s Ferrari. The no66 Ford GT wass third in hands of Olivier Pla.
LMGTE Am sees the title leading no83 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia heads the class from the no50 Larbre Competition Chevrolet Corvette. The top five LMGTE Am cars were covered by just 0.6s.
The final Free Practice session is scheduled for 09h15 on Saturday morning.
