FIA Region IV Hosts Road Safety Training in Quito

04.09.24

From July 22 to 24, the Cumbayá Sustainable Driving School in Quito, managed by the Automobile Club of Ecuador (ANETA), became a hub for road safety training as FIA Region IV held its regional workshop on Emergency Signage and Crash Scene Analysis.

This specialised training brought together representatives from FIA Region IV Member Clubs, equipping them with essential skills to set up emergency signage and temporary barriers around crash scenes.

These measures aim to achieve two critical objectives: preventing further accidents in the crash zone and ensuring the safety of personnel working on-site to gather evidence, measurements, and photographs to reconstruct the incident.

Participants were introduced to a new signage methodology that enhances both efficiency and safety, reducing the risk of secondary collisions.

Over the course of the workshop, attendees also explored key topics in crash reconstruction, including site descriptions, identifying different types of skid marks and vehicle traces, taking critical photographs, developing accurate diagrams using the Cartesian method, and compiling comprehensive technical reports.

The workshop was led by Leandro Perillo, FIA Region IV Manager of Mobility and Public Policies, and Pablo Daniel Azorín, FIA Region IV Manager of Road Safety and Environment.

It brought together nine Member Clubs from FIA Region IV:

  • Automóvil Club del Ecuador (ANETA)
  • Automóvil Club de Uruguay (ACU)
  • Automóvil Club Brasilero (ACBr)
  • Automóvil Club Boliviano (ACB)
  • Automóvil Club de Costa Rica (ACCR)
  • Automóvil Club de Colombia (ACC)
  • Touring y Automóvil Club del Perú (TACP)
  • Automóvil Club de Guatemala (ACG)
  • Asociación Hondureña de Automovilismo Deportivo (AHAD)

Participants not only acquired theoretical knowledge but also received practical tools like odometers, calipers, pressure gauges, and reflective vests, essential for accurately documenting crash scenes. With these tools, they can prepare detailed reports that help reconstruct the incident and propose safety measures to prevent similar crashes in the future.

FIA Region IV expects Member Clubs to continue playing a pivotal role in enhancing road safety by conducting thorough, data-driven investigations and leveraging advanced technical resources. These efforts are aligned with the ongoing mission to reduce road fatalities and enhance safety for all road users across the region.
