Quality over quantity summarises BMW’s title defence attempt of the 2019 FIA GT World Cup as the gargantuan German manufacturer arrives at the Macau Grand Prix with two entries.

It was a similar story last year as a sole BMW M6 GT3 lined up on the grid, but that was more than enough as Brazilian Augusto Farfus Jnr romped to a memorable victory for the Bavarian marque.

Farfus is back to defend his crown in 2019 and will be clearly marked out as the man to beat by the rival squads from Audi, Mercedes and Porsche.

The 36-year-old snatched the lead around the 6.2km street track in 2018 before going on to score a commanding victory in the Qualification Race.

Whilst Farfus was placed under pressure during the main event, he eventually claimed a lights-to-flag victory to win the FIA GT World Cup at the Macau Grand Prix.

“It’s great to be defending our title,” said Farfus. “This is the biggest GT sprint race in the world, at one of the best tracks in the world. It’s a real privilege for me.

“We worked really hard for that trophy, so we are looking forward to trying to win it again.”

If success doesn’t arrive at the hands of Farfus Jnr then team-mate Joel Eriksson will also be a likely contender.

The super-quick Swede will pilot the other BMW M6 GT3 as the DTM regular returns to Macau.

The 21-year-old makes his GT debut around the Guia Street track later this week, but has good experience having raced there previously in Formula 3, scoring a podium at last year’s event.

The M6 GT3 car is a potent force at Macau, proving to be the class of the field in 2018, and with these two talents behind the wheel BMW is sure to be one to watch at this year’s FIA GT World Cup.

The FIA GT World Cup and FIA F3 World Cup will take place as part of the 66th running of the Macau Grand Prix over the weekend of 14-17 November.
