World RX - Ekstrom takes Q3 at COTA
2018 World RX of USA - Qualifying 3
EKS Audi Sport’s Mattias Ekstrom took fastest time in Q3 on Sunday morning at the World RX of USA, round ten of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Austin, Texas.
On a drying circuit following rain after warm-up, Ekstrom won Q3 race two to set a quicker time than race one winner, Team Peugeot Total’s Sebastien Loeb. Overnight TQ (top qualifier) Petter Solberg then won race three after a close battle in the first two corners with team mate Johan Kristoffersson and GRX Taneco’s Niclas Gronholm.
With his car filled with smoke after a nudge in the rear at turn three, Solberg was second quickest and Kristoffersson passed Gronholm with a joker lap strategy to be second in race three and third overall. Loeb’s time was good enough for fourth and GC Kompetition’s Guerlain Chicherit was fifth. Team Peugeot Total’s Kevin Hansen overtook Gronholm at the joker exit in race three and was sixth quickest in front of Team STARD’s Janis Baumanis.
EKS’ Andreas Bakkerud made a slow start in race three and was tenth quickest, so dropped from third to sixth in the Intermediate Classification. Team Peugeot Total’s Timmy Hansen had a problem at the start of race two and didn’t take the start. He immediately left the grid and returned his Peugeot 208 WRX to the paddock.
