This weekend, two all-female crews will again line up for the world’s most famous and mythical endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans (August 21-22). As full-time racers in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the six FIA Women in Motorsport Commission-supported drivers - competing with the Richard Mille Racing Team and Iron Lynx in the Iron Dames project – will take their place on the 61-car grid for the 89th edition of the race.
After an impressive debut outing last year, when they also became the first all-female LMP2 crew to take the start of Le Mans, the Richard Mille Racing Team will be back in action on the Circuit de la Sarthe as part of the 25 strong LMP2 field. Tatiana Calderón, Sophia Flörsch and Beitske Visser will be at the helm of the #1 Oreca 07, Gibson-powered race car run by Philippe Sinault’s Signatech team, aiming to improve on their outstanding ninth place of the LMP2 crews last year.
Among the 25 LMGTE Am entries, the Iron Dames - a unique project conceived and supported by Deborah Mayer, a passionate French driver and promoter of women in motor sport - will be run by Iron Lynx. The #85 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo will be in the hands of Rahel Frey, Michelle Gatting and Le Mans newcomer Sarah Bovy. Frey and Gatting, along with Manuela Gostner, finished ninth in their category on their debut outing at Le Mans in 2019 and equalled that result with another fine performance last year.
The FIA Women in Motorsport social media channels will be following both teams, so be sure to follow @fiawim to be part of a unique insight into Le Mans and its women in motor sport.
