Exploring the Future of Mobility: AI and Technological Innovation Discussed at the IATA World Data Symposium

12.03.25

On 26 February, at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) World Data Symposium (WDS) in Dublin, Ireland, FIA Chief Development Officer Habib Turki discussed how cutting-edge technologies, AI, and data analytics in motor sport can contribute to shaping the future of mobility, both in the automotive and aviation sectors.

One focus of Habib’s presentation was how technological advancements in motorsport can influence broader automotive innovation. He highlighted key technological advancements, such as hybrid power units (PU) and energy recovery systems (ERS), that were tested and developed in motor sport competitions.

As AI continues to revolutionise various industries, he also emphasised its role in motor sport and how it is being used to enhance performance, safety, and decision-making. He described how the FIA focuses on real-time data collection, AI-driven safety measures, and team collaborations to develop standardised regulations. The use of AI in race control — assisting human decision-makers — was also highlighted as a crucial development in ensuring accuracy and fairness during races.

Habib then explained that AI-driven data analytics and real-time telemetry analysis in motor sport are paving the way for advancements in autonomous driving, connected vehicle systems, and safety monitoring.

The session concluded by highlighting how technological advancements in motor sport are benefiting other mobility industries beyond road transport — from rail and maritime to aviation. In particular, the FIA’s commitment to sustainable fuel development serves as a compelling proof of concept for reducing carbon emissions and accelerating the adoption of sustainable fuels.

As technology continues to evolve rapidly, motor sport remains a crucial incubator for innovation, facilitating the development of cutting-edge technologies that have the potential to help achieve the FIA’s goal to build a safe, sustainable and accessible mobility future. As the governing body world motor sport and federation of the world’s leading mobility organisations, the FIA is uniquely positioned to champion these advances.
