For World Sight Day (WSD) 2017, the FIA welcomed Michael Fassbender as its new #3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign Ambassador. Advocating for improved vision, Fassbender represents the “Check your Vision” Golden Rule for Road Safety. This year, the Federation renews its support for this international day of awareness — held annually on the second Thursday of October — to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and vision impairment.

Excessive speed is one of the leading causes of road fatalities. An estimated 40%-50% of people drive over the speed limit and a 5% reduction in average speed could result in a 30% decrease in number of fatal crashes. Today, FIA Region I and its members in Europe, the Middle East and Africa are launching their new campaign ‘Slowing Down Saves Lives’ and are urging drivers to respect speed limits.
