On the occasion of the first-ever Formula E race in Rome, leaders in the area of global development and sustainability shared their insights on the future of urban mobility in rapidly growing cities. 

Among the topics discussed were the challenges cities currently face in the field of urban mobility including congestion, pollution, lack of mobility choices and poor safety measures. Panelists talked about the solutions that can be put in place to solve these issues. The implementation of fair and evidence-based regulations can act as a powerful incentive to trigger change in users' habits. They also mentioned that the facilitation of knowledge-sharing and collaboration between cities can allow for mobility solutions and best practices to be transferred from megacities and capitals to medium and smaller cities. 

Talking about reaching sustainable mobility targets, speakers touched on the impact of climate change on cities. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco reminded the audience about the main goals of his Foundation, created in 2006, and which is dedicated to the protection of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development. Held in the framework of the Formula E race, the FIA Smart Cities Talk was the perfect platform to highlight the role of motor sport as a catalyst for change, acting not only as a laboratory to develop technology, but also as a tool to make perceptions towards electric vehicles evolve.

The discussion then moved on to road safety, a serious public health issue that has a direct impact on people’s lives. "Our cities are not only centres of economic growth and integration, they are also places where people should be able to move in a safe, efficient and sustainable manner. Making urban journeys safer goes beyond health consideration, contributing to the overall liveability in cities. By working hand in hand with ambitious political leaders and local communities, we can create a new reality in which every road user feel safe and comfortable in every corner of constantly growing urban areas.", declared Jean Todt.
