WEC: What’s new in 2022?

The 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship features the series’ biggest-ever entry in its tenth anniversary year. The quality and diversity of entries across all four categories will provide non-stop action throughout the six-round season which will visit North America, Europe, Middle East and Asia.

Hypercar in 2022

Reigning World champions Toyota Gazoo Racing will field two Toyota GR010 Hybrids with Peugeot TotalEnergies submitting two Peugeot 9x8 Hybrid Hypercars as French manufacturer to challenge the Japanese giant in WEC’s top-tier category. 

American pioneers Glickenhaus Racing will enter one Glickenhaus 007 LMH entry while the Alpine Elf Team to return to WEC’s top-tier category with its non-Hybrid LMP1 (Alpine A480 Gibson), using 2022 as further preparation for its first Hypercar programme. 

Meanwhile, keep a weather eye open for all the latest developments among the entries of new manufacturers including Ferrari and Porsche as they develop their Hypercar contenders for 2023 and beyond.

What’s New in LMP2

The 2022 season brings the largest ever LMP2 field in WEC history, hailing from eight different nations (Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United States. The new entries hail from four new contenders to WEC: Team Penske (USA), Prema Orlen Team (Italy), Vector Sport (UK), Ultimate (France) and Algarve Racing Team (Portugal).

Corvette joins LMGTE Pro

The biggest news before the start of the 2022 season is that Le Mans egular Chevrolet has come on board for a full season’s campaign with its stellar Corvette C8.R to do battle with Ferrari and Porsche. All three marques will go head-to-head in LMGTE Pro, where Ferrari remains most successful GTE manufacturer in WEC history, having claimed seven titles. The 2018/2019 champions Porsche also return with the well-proven 911 RSR – 19 ready to contend for honours once again.

Strength in Depth for LMGTE Am

A total of 13 entries five each for Ferrari and Porsche, with a further three Aston Martin entrants will include an all-female line-up with No. 85 Iron Dames entry. Experience will be plentiful with the return of familiar teams such as AF Corse, Dempsey-Proton Racing, Team Project 1, Iron Lynx, D’Station Racing and GR Racing to ensure another hard-fought year for the mix of pro and amateur stars.
