WEC - Toyota and Aston Martin Lead in the Rain at Spa
In the second free practice session of the day at Spa-Francorchamps heavy rain provided the competitors with some tricky track conditions to contend with. Four red flags punctuated the session including one that brought the practice to a close a couple of minutes early.
The no8 Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050 hybrid was the quickest car on the track, with Fernando Alonso setting a 2m19.483 lap, 1.382s ahead of the no7 Toyota, with the best time of 2m20.865 set by Mike Conway.
The no11 SMP Racing BR01 places third overall as Vitaly Petrov claims fastest time for Russian team, 1.946s behind the no8 Toyota.
The session was red flagged four times, including two for accidents involving Stephane Sarrazin in no17 SMP Racing car and no50 Larbre Competition Ligier of Nicolas Boulle. Both drivers were OK.
Marco Sorensen claimed the fastest LMGTE Pro class lap time in no95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage, with the Dane’s best time of 2m32.648 0.250s ahead of the no91 Porsche 911 of Gianmaria Bruni. The no97 Aston Martin was third ahead of no71 AF Corse Ferrari
In the LMP2 category the no31 Dragonspeed Oreca was the quickest in the tricky conditions with Pastor Maldonado setting the session best of 2m27.682s. The no28 TDS Racing Oreca-Gibson was second with Matthieu Vaxiviere posting a 2m29.295s lap, just ahead of the no38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca-Gibson piloted by Gabriel Aubry.
The no36 Signatech Alpine Matmut A470 brought the session to a close with Pierre Thiriet spinning of the track to bring out the final red flag of the practice period.
In LMGTE Am Matt Campbell led the way in the no77 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche as the Australian claimed the class best lap time of 2m34.093s. The no70 MR Racing Ferrari driven by Olivier Beretta was second fastest with a 2m34.851, with Gulf Racing Porsche in third.
