WEC: New Season, New Challenge for Alex Brundle

28.04.21

European Le Mans Series LMP3 champion and 24 Hours of the Nürburgring class winner Alex Brundle joins Polish outfit Inter Europol Competition in their debut FIA World Endurance Championship season, starting this weekend with the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

We caught up with the British driver at the end of the third session at The Prologue, the official pre-season test at Spa, to find out about the upcoming campaign in the FIA WEC.

Q: You are with a new team, Inter Europol Competition, for the 2021 season. How are you getting on with the team and your new teammates?

AB: “Well certainly joining a new team is always a new adventure but I’ve been welcomed unbelievably by Inter Europol Competition. They’re such a down to earth and pleasant group of people, so first and foremost the work environment is great. And we’ve been working really hard. Renger is a massive star and a massive talent, and Kuba is developing all the time as well. We’ve been working incredibly hard on getting the car right and I’m really enjoying the new challenge of working with Inter Europol Competition.”

Q: How has testing gone so far?

AB: “The first day of testing was a little challenging for us with some technical issues and interrupted running, which everybody suffered really with the red flags. I would say the second day for us has gone much better, we’ve got really good laps under our belt this morning. Always making good progress with the car, focusing on our race pace.”

Q: The LMP2 grid is strong, who do you see as the teams to watch in the season ahead?

AB: “LMP2 is incredibly strong this year, one of the strongest years we’ve had in the WEC. I think everybody is going to be fighting for the top three positions. Racing Team Nederlands are going to be strong, United Autosports are always strong, JOTA are strong and hopefully, as we progress through the season, we’re going to be putting in challenges for podiums and race wins as well.”

Q: What are the goals for the season ahead?

AB: “We’re starting with very much a new team to the FIA World Endurance Championship.  Realistically we’re aiming to build and grow. Hopefully gain some podiums in the early races of the year and points. Then, hopefully, by the end of the season challenging for race wins.  But, as always with me, I just want to run up front.”

Q: What are your thoughts on the track here at Spa-Francorchamps? What is your favourite corner and why?

AB: “Spa-Francorchamps absolutely needs no introduction from me. Eau Rouge is the boring favourite, but it is definitely my favourite. It’s such a challenge for the drivers, and in a sportscar as well with a little more weight than a single seater, it’s so much more challenging to keep the car under control. It comes every two minutes, and you live it every time. It’s a brilliant racetrack here. Yes, the modern touches have taken away a little bit of the edge, but it’s got so much charm.”
