WEC: Kobayashi tops final practice at Fuji for Toyota

Local fan favorite Kamui Kobayashi in #7 Toyota Gazoo Racing entry topped the times in the final free practice ahead of this Sunday’s 6 Hours of Fuji, the penultimate round of the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship season

Kobayashi in #7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid went fastest of all in the final practice session of the event, held ahead of the all-important qualifying.

The local ace peaked on the best lap of 1m30.068 to keep the Japanese manufacturer on top of the timing screens for the second session in a row after Sebastien Buemi went fastest in Friday’s Free Practice 2 and wiht the opening session of the event going to Ferrari AF Corse’s Antonio Fuoco.

The session started in wet weather conditions, but the surface soon dried up before a brief shower occurred in the final 10 minutes.

Kobayashi’s time eclipsed Loic Duval’s best effort of 1m30.476 in the #94 Peugeot TotalEnergies 9X8.

Hertz Team Jota was third-fastest as Antonio Felix da Costa clocked his best time of 1m30.501. The second of the Peugeots was fourth with Mikkel Jensen setting a late 1m30.695 lap.

Proton Competition Porsche 963 placed a strong fifth as Harry Tincknell recorded 1m30.710 to make it two non-factory Porsches in the top five, with the two Porsche Penske Motorsport-operated cars rounding out the top 10.

#23 United Autosports Oreca-Gibson went fastest among the LMP2 cars as Oliver Jarvis set class-best 1m34.258, beating Matthieu Vaxivière in #36 Alpine ELF Team Oreca-Gibson by just 0.234s.

In LMGTE Am Davide Rigon led the way for the second consecutive session in the #54 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE Evo as he set the best lap of 1m39.074s.

A collision between the Inter Europol Competition Oreca-Gibson and the #54 AF Corse Ferrari at Turn 1 saw the latter of the two sent pitwards with a broken wheel.
