Former Caterham F1 driver and 2008 Formula Renault 3.5 Champion Giedo van der Garde will be competing in the final three races of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship in the LMP2 no30 Extreme Speed Motorsport Ligier JS P2-Nissan alongside Antonio Giovinazzi and Sean Gelael.

The Dutch driver has been enjoying success in his debut sportscar season racing with the G-Drive Racing team in the European Le Mans Series, winning at Silverstone and challenging for the 2016 European title.  He has also competed for G-Drive Racing at the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier in the year, so is no stranger to the WEC grid.

We caught up with Giedo ahead of the trip to Japan where he will make his debut for the American team at the 6 Hours of Fuji on the 16 October.

Q: So how did the drive with ESM come about?

GVDG: “Sean Gelael made a good deal with the team and they were looking for a driver and suddenly they came up with me.  I have the experience and I have shown I have the speed this year.  This is a great opportunity, the driver lineup is very good and the team has a lot of experience.  We have a good car so I am looking forward to it.”

Q: So will it be good to be back in an FIA World Championship?

“Yes it’s nice.  Of course I did the two races earlier this year at Spa and Le Mans and we were a bit unfortunate in both races so I hope we have a bit more luck in Japan, China and Bahrain. I have learned a lot over the last few months in the ELMS and WEC races so that is very good and I am sure we can get a good result in Fuji.  The track in Fuji is new for all of us but the rest I know quite well.”

Q: Your ELMS teammate Harry Tincknell will also be in Fuji in the Ford GT.  Has he helped you this year transfer from single seaters to prototypes?

“It is always good to have Harry around, I have learned a lot from him this year and he has been a very good teammate. So hopefully when he sees my car in his mirrors he can let me pass easily.”

Q: And what are your thoughts on Japan?

“I love it, it is one of my favourite countries.  I will spend some time in Tokyo and the food is always good.  I have never been to Fuji, this is my first time but I am looking forward to it.”

The 6 Hours of Fuji is Round 7 of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship and will take place on 14-16 October.
