WEC - Alpine Top Times in FP3 as Porsche Dominate GTE
In the final Free Practice session before Hyperpole at 21h00 this evening, the #36 Alpine Elf Matmut A480-Gibson topped the time sheets, with Nicolas Lapierre posting a 3m26.594 lap despite a spin in the latter stages of the session, just three tenths slower than the best time of the weekend so far set by the #7 Toyota GR010 during qualifying.
Lapierre’s time in FP3 was 1.4 seconds faster than the two Toyotas. The #7 GR010-Hybrid was the faster of the two cars, with Mike Conway posting a 3m28.064, two tenths ahead of the #8 Toyota at the end of the 3-hour session. Sebastien Buemi has small lock-up and trip down escape road at Arnage midway through session in the #8 Toyota and then there was more drama for the same car late in session as Kazuki Nakajima backed into wall at Indianapolis triggering a Full Course Yellow period.
The #92 Porsche GT Team 911 RSR-19 lead a Porsche 1-2-3 in FP3, with Kevin Estre setting a 3m48.126 lap, 0.309s ahead of the #79WeatherTech Racing 911 of former Le Mans winner Earl Bamber and 0.663s ahead of the #91 Porsche GT Team Porsche.
The #38 JOTA Oreca 07-Gibson once again led the way in another session with Antonio Felix Da Costa posting a session best time of 3m30.213 in the LMP2 category just before the chequered flag. The #22 United Autosports USA Oreca was second quickest, with Fabio Scherer setting a 3m30.660, half a second ahead of his teammate Alex Lynn in the #23 United Autosports Oreca.
It was a dramatic session for the Racing Team Nederland squad as first Giedo van der Garde has contact with #48 IDEC car driven by Patrick Pilet and then Frits van Eerd has two trips into the gravel traps.
The #17 IDEC Sport driven by Dwight Merriman also suffered an accident at Dunlop Chicane to trigger first red flag in first hour of session and then a second red flag later in the session was caused by the #21 Dragonspeed Oreca as Juan-Pablo Montoya crashed at the same place as Merriman.
The LMGTE Am class was dominated by Porsche in 3-hour session with the top four spots taken by a 911 RSR-19. The #88 Dempsey Proton Racing Porsche led the way with a session best of 3m51.167s set by Julien Andlauer. The #56 Team Project 1 Porsche driven by Egidio Perfetti, Riccardo Pera and Matteo Cairoli were second fastest in bumper LMGTE Am category, with the #77 Dempsey-Proton Racing 911 third and the #99 Proton Competition Porsche fourth.
