FIA Receives Silver Award at United Nations World Tourism Organisation's 25th General Assembly
The 25th General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 16 to 20 October 2023, was a landmark event for the international tourism community and for the FIA, which received a Silver Award. The participation of the Federation, represented by FIA Director of Tourism Services Habib Turki, not only celebrated 40 years of partnership but also highlighted the joint commitment of the FIA and the UNWTO to develop future collaborations in various crucial areas.
Receiving a Silver Award was an honour for the FIA. It marked four decades of partnership with the UNWTO, and recognised the long-standing commitment and contributions of the Federation in the realm of global tourism.
The event was also the occasion for Mr. Turki to engage in discussions and work on agreements that will shape the future of tourism services for FIA Members. Significant meetings took place with Ambassador Ion Vilcu, the Director of the Affiliated Membership Department at UNWTO, during which it was agreed to explore future collaborations in the areas of sport tourism, sustainable development, and accessibility for tourists. This collaborative approach between the FIA and UNWTO reflects their shared commitment to enhancing the global tourism industry, ensuring it remains sustainable and accessible to all.
Another pivotal moment was a discussion with UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, that underscored the commitment of both organisations to work closely together in the future. Such collaborations promise a stronger and more effective partnership, leading to innovative solutions and strategies for the tourism sector.
The choice of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, as the location for the 25th UNWTO General Assembly added historical significance to the event. Samarkand, a city steeped in culture and history, provided a fitting backdrop for discussions on preserving and promoting global tourism.
