FIA ACTION FOR ENVIRONMENT – SUPPORTING WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
As the global community prepares to celebrate World Environment Day 2019 on June 5, the FIA goes behind the scenes about the contribution of some of its major Championships to environmental preservation.
World Environment Day is a United Nations global movement to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Celebrated on the 5th of June every year since 1974, the event has developed into a global platform for raising awareness on environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. Each World Environment Day is organised around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern and calls to action.
The theme for 2019 is “Air Pollution”. According to the World Health Organisation, nine out of ten people on earth breathe a polluted air and an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths annually are linked to outdoor air pollution. In urban areas, air pollution is today the highest environmental risk to health.
For the FIA, World Environment Day is a powerful advocacy tool to educate on this issue of great concern and mobilise resources to address the challenge. It is also the occasion to celebrate and reinforce its achievements. In the coming days, the FIA will be revealing the true story about its contribution to the protection of our environment through the lens of some of its major Championships: Formula E, World Rally Championship and Formula 1. Stay tuned and check the FIA social media platforms to learn all about it!
But remember that World Environment Day is above all a “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth. This can be a local, national or global action supported by only one person or a bigger crowd.
The FIA is inviting everyone to join the movement and share a World Environment Day commitment on social media using the following hashtags: #WorldEnvironmentDay #FIAActionForEnvironment #BeatAirPollution
