EDRC: 2021 season called off
Following the cancellation of four out of six originally scheduled rounds, the organisers of the remaining two have now confirmed that their events will also not take place, resulting in the cancellation of the 2021 FIA European Drag Racing Championship season.
The organisers have taken the decision in the wake of the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and related international travel restrictions and limitations on spectator access, making holding events of international status unviable.
The originally-announced provisional 2021 FIA EDRC calendar included six events held between late May and mid-September and visiting popular drag racing venues: Santa Pod Raceway, Tierp Arena, Kauhava and the Hockenheimring.
The Swedish (August 12-15) and British (September 9-12) events may still be staged with the status of national competitions.
The 2021 FIA EDRC season is the second campaign in a row to be called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the 2019 season remaining the last with FIA Drag Racing titles awarded.
Lars Pettersson, FIA Drag Racing Commission President, said: “It’s certainly disappointing not to have the FIA European Drag Racing Championship season for the second time in a row, but we completely understand and sympathise with the event organisers, who have had much of their business affected by the pandemic. The FIA Drag Commission will work with the organisers and competitors to do all we can to bring the championship back next season. In the meantime, we look forward to the various national competitions that will hopefully still go ahead.”
