Crucial Spanish stage in the European Championship
The results of the first Competition of the CIK-FIA European KZ and KZ2 Championship at Sarno (ITA) revealed plenty of surprises and many of the Drivers are craving revenge at Zuera. Their enthusiasm will be tempered, however, by the use of new front fairing fasteners that have already demonstrated their effectiveness in KF and KF-Junior in limiting unsporting behaviour. Added to this will be the new selection of the Circuito Internacional Zuera, 1700 metres long, in use for the first time in a CIK-FIA Competition for gearbox karts.
The Italian Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart-Vortex-B'stone) will arrive on Spanish soil with the enviable status of leader of the standings in KZ, followed closely by the dreaded Briton Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions-TM Racing-B'stone) currently in top form on all fronts. But we should not forget the World Champion Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex-B'stone) in 3rd position by a short distance, probably very motivated to take control. Behind these three logical favorites, the situation is very open with many outsiders trying to take advantage of the Spanish race to be closer to the leaders before the conclusion of the Championship in Belgium in mid-July.
In KZ2, the Dane Andreas Fasberg (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) seems more comfortable thanks to his 14-point lead over his closest challenger, the Spaniard Pedro Hiltbrand (CRGSPA-Maxter-LeCont) who will, however, have the advantage of driving at home at Zuera. Four Drivers closely follow in terms of points in 3rd to 6th positions. Fabian Federer (CRGSPA-Maxter-LeCont), Marijn Kremers (BirelART-Parilla-LeCont) and Italian Luca Corberi (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) are tied, only two points ahead of Felice Tiene (CRGSPA-Maxter-LeCont). Some Spanish and French drivers will join the Competition at Zuera thanks to the wild cards allowed by the regulations, among them Thomas Mich (BirelART-TM-LeCont Racing), who often races in KZ.
Finally, the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy will bring a breath of fresh air and renewal to the discipline with 51 Drivers ready to compete on equal terms at the wheel of their single-make, randomly selected karts, with a Parolin engine and FIM chassis and shod with Bridgestone tyres. For this 6th edition, the Parolin Racing technical team have mastered their subject more than ever. Drivers therefore need only to concentrate on driving, being careful to race fairly on the track and not to risk a penalty for dislodging their front fairing. From four continents, 36 nations have decided to participate in this Competition by entering one or more drivers to defend their colours, with Latvia, Mozambique and the Dominican Republic among the newcomers.
