During the meeting, the Panel expressed its support for the #3500LIVES campaign that will be launched by the FIA and JCDecaux this Friday 10 March 2017 in Paris, at the Automobile Club de France.

This campaign aims to raise awareness on the devastating number of deaths that occur every day on the world’s roads. It features 13 celebrities from the sport, film and music industries. Each of them embodies one of the FIA’s Golden Rules on key risk factors on the road. The campaign also calls for support to the FIA’s Manifesto for Global Road Safety, which calls for safer vehicles, better infrastructure, and the introduction of effective legislation which is enforced. 

Christian Friis Bach, Executive Secretary and Under-Secretary-General of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, gave an update on the status of the proposal for the establishment of a UN Road Safety Fund and introduced a discussion on how the Panel could support a new initiative to encourage the vehicle manufacturers to commit to minimum UN vehicle safety standards.

An update on the in-country mission to Myanmar was presented and the members of the Panel discussed about the next steps to follow.  Also on the agenda, more information was given on the progress made for the establishment of Regional Road Safety Observatories in the EuroMed Region and the ASEAN Region, two projects the Panel strongly supports.
