An Innovative Career Programme for Young People in Bahrain

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) launched a groundbreaking youth engagement programme called CareerShift at the Bahrain International Circuit on October 31, 2024. Developed in partnership with the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), this initiative aims to inspire and educate young people about the diverse career opportunities available in the world of motor sport.

CareerShift provides participants with a unique behind-the-scenes look at an FIA World Championship event, designed to ignite curiosity and ambition in those interested in a career in motor sport. Through various workshops, tours, and hands-on activities, students gain insight into the multifaceted world of motor sport and hear directly from industry professionals about their career journeys.

Sara Mariani, FIA’s Sustainability and Diversity & Inclusion Director, states, “CareerShift is a vital step in our mission to double participation in motor sport. We aim to reach young people from diverse geographical areas who may not have previously considered a career in the industry. Partnering with the FIA World Endurance Championship allows us to showcase the vast range of opportunities within motor sport, going beyond the well-known roles of mechanics and engineers to include media, public relations, hospitality, and race officials.

“While participants learn about future professional opportunities, they also receive immediate ways to engage and grow their passion for motor sport, such as through volunteering and marshaling. We’re grateful for WEC’s support in helping us inspire the next generation, providing them invaluable insight into the many exciting career paths motor sport has to offer.”

The programme covers various key areas of the motor sport industry, including:

Media and Communication Workshop: Participants visit the media centre and hear from the FIA Media Delegate about their role and career path. The session includes interactive challenges to engage students in the communication aspects of motor sport.

Race Control Tour: Attendees experience the operations of Race Control, where key decisions are made during a race. They meet race officials such as the Clerk of the Course, Race Director, and Stewards, learning about their entry into the world of motor sport.

Pit Lane Tour: Participants walk along the pit lane and explore the garages of WEC teams, offering a rare glimpse into the technical side of motor sport and the workings of a race team during a live event.

Marshal’s Flag Challenge: This interactive session introduces participants to the crucial role of marshals in race safety, offering insight into how they can get involved in motor sport through their local National Sporting Authority (ASN).

Environmental Awareness Workshop: This session addresses critical environmental issues such as climate change and recycling, providing participants with a broader understanding of the industry's sustainability challenges.

Career Panel Event: A highlight of the day is a panel discussion featuring representatives from the FIA, WEC, teams, and local ASN. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the different career pathways available in motor sport.

Local universities, colleges, and NGOs invite up to 50 young people aged between 16 and 22 to participate in this exciting programme.

The launch of CareerShift at Bahrain International Circuit marks the next step in the FIA’s commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and sustainable career pathways within motor sport. This event provided unforgettable experience, offering exclusive insights into the dynamic and exciting careers in motor sport.
