Eastern European Clubs promote child safety in school areas
The Auto-Moto Association of Serbia (AMSS), the Automobile Association of Macedonia (AMSM), the Bulgarian Automobile Federation (UAB) and Shoqata Auto Moto Dardania (SHAMD) conducted a joint project aiming to reduce the risks faced by children around schools using the iRap (International Road Assessment Programme) “Star Rating for Schools” methodology.
Supported by the FIA Road Safety Grants Programme, this project assessed 17 schools in four countries.
The “Star Rating for School” app developed by iRAP provides a methodology on how to improve child safety in school areas by assessing the road situation and proposing solutions. The four FIA Members received a theoretical and practical training from iRAP representatives, leading NGOs and EASST (Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport).
The main problems identified in school zones were the lack of traffic signage, poor speed management, and the presence of roadsides obstacles. The “Star Rating for School” project helped to catch the attention of local authorities and state stakeholders on the importance of this topic. As an example, local authorities in Macedonia expressed a special interest to develop the proposed infrastructure improvements in the city of Skopje. The project also helped to educate pupils and vulnerable road users about safe behaviour on the road, which was a weak point in these Clubs’ countries. It is important to point out that this is the first time that an international project on road safety with the FIA was conducted in Kosovo.
