Formula 3 - Hon Chio Leong – newcomer in the FIA F3 European Championship

14.08.18

Team Hitech Bullfrog GP will contest its home race meeting with four drivers. On the one hand the three regulars Enaam Ahmed, Alex Palou and Ben Hingeley – and on the other, Hon Chio Leong, the only 16 year old talent from Macau.

Leong, whose nickname is Charles, contests the new FIA Formula 3 series in Asia, this year, and secured two podiums in his first race meeting – at Sepang – right away. But he already celebrated major successes in the previous years. In 2017, just 15 years old, he won both the Formula Renault Asia and the FIA Formula 4 China titles. Now he is looking forward to his first appearance on the FIA F3 European Championship grid. “Racing in the FIA F3 European Championship at Silverstone will be a new step for me,” he says. “It's going to be a whole new experience. I'm very happy to race with Hitech Bullfrog GP, and I believe the team will bring me up to a new level.” Charles Leong isn’t a stranger for Hitech Bullfrog GP Team Principal Oliver Oakes, as the teenager contests the Formula 3 Asia for the sister team, Hitech Dragon GP. Consequently, former World Kart Champion Oakes is particularly happy with his latest signing. “We are really happy to have Charles competing for us at our home-race. His proven ability in the first round of the FIA F3 Asian Championship gives us the confidence that he will have a great run out in the car”, says Oakes. Leong’s appearance in FIA F3 European Championship once again demonstrates the outstanding international reputation of the seriesthat produced, since its creation as an independent series in 2013, the current F1 drivers Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll – to mention just a few. But the young FIA Formula 3 European Championship drivers also are highly in demand in other professional race series, such as DTM or the FIA WEC. For instance, Joel Eriksson and Lucas Auer currently are demonstrating in DTM that they have got what it takes to match the pace of the best touring-car drivers in the world. And Gustavo Menezes and Harry Tincknell are just two of the former F3 drivers who built up a reputation in the FIA WEC.
