Everything is new as the FIA World Rally Championship contenders head to round 10 of the series and Rally Turkey Marmaris (13-16 September). While the country is no newcomer and was included in the WRC calendar six times between 2003 and 2010, their event was previously based in Kemer, close to Antalya, and then latterly further north near Istanbul. Now, the returning event has moved to the Mediterranean port city and holiday resort of Marmaris promising a totally fresh and very open challenge for the crews heading to this gravel rally. 

With no previous experience of the roads in the southwest of the country, drivers and co-drivers will have to make pace notes from a blank sheet of paper, and get up to speed quickly due to a lack of prior knowledge about car set-up, tyre wear and performance. Hot, late summer temperatures will also be a factor with the thermometer likely to hit 30 degrees.

With nine of the 13 rounds completed, the Championship remains hotly contested. Thierry Neuville continues to top the standings with a 23-point advantage over Sébastien Ogier, but with consecutive victories on the last two events, Ott Tänak has brought himself into play. He is 13 points adrift of Ogier and continues to target event wins. The two main title contenders in the FIA WRC 2 Championship come head to head in Turkey; Jan Kopecký holds a slim seven point lead over Škoda team-mate Pontus Tidemand, the pair having won seven of the nine rounds contested so far this season. The FIA Junior WRC Championship also comes to a thrilling climax on its fifth and final round and no fewer than nine crews have a mathematical chance of the title. With double points on offer for the first time, coupled with points for individual stage wins, there are 67 points left to claim as the contenders battle for one of the biggest prizes in world rallying; ownership of a brand new Ford Fiesta R5 and free registration into next season’s WRC 2 Championship. All these crews are automatically entered in the similar two-wheel drive FIA WRC 3 Championship, with Louise Cook also joining the fray.

Three stages will be broadcast live on television: SS12 on Saturday and both passes of Marmaris on Sunday, the second run counting as the all-important Power Stage. All stages will however be broadcast live on WRC All Live on the WRC+ platform.

THE 2018 ROUTE

Rally Turkey is one of the most compact on the calendar with 35% of its route competitive. Its return to the FIA World Rally Championship for the first time in eight years kicks off with a short stage through the streets of downtown Marmaris on Thursday evening before the gravel action gets underway on Friday. Heading northeast towards Muğla, the day takes in two identical loops of three stages including the longest of the event. Saturday, to the west, takes on a similar format and packs in 130 kilometres of competition in a total distance of just 306 kilometres. Sunday is short with four stages, culminating with the Marmaris Power Stage that ends in the Asparan Service Park.

RALLYE DE TURQUIE 2018 

L’heure est à la nouveauté pour les concurrents du Championnat du Monde des Rallyes de la FIA qui abordent la dixième manche de la série, le Rally Turkey Marmaris (13-16 septembre). Certes, le pays a déjà figuré au calendrier WRC entre 2003 et 2010 mais l’épreuve était alors basée à Kemer, près d’Antalya, puis plus au nord dans la région d’Istanbul. Cette année, elle se déroulera dans la station balnéaire de Marmaris sur la côte méditerranéenne, pour un challenge inédit et très ouvert disputé entièrement sur terre. 

N’ayant aucune expérience des routes du sud-ouest du pays, les pilotes et copilotes devront prendre des notes détaillées et s’adapter rapidement pour pallier le manque de connaissances sur la configuration de la voiture, l’usure des pneus et les performances. Les températures élevées en cette fin d’été seront également décisives, le thermomètre pouvant grimper jusqu’à 30 degrés.

Au terme de neuf manches sur 13, la bataille demeure très serrée. Thierry Neuville figure toujours en tête du classement, distançant Sébastien Ogier de 23 points, mais avec ses victoires consécutives aux deux dernières épreuves, Ott Tänak a fait une percée remarquée. Il n’est plus qu’à 13 points d’Ogier et représente donc un outsider sérieux. Les deux principaux prétendants au titre du Championnat WRC 2 de la FIA seront au coude à coude en Turquie. Jan Kopecký ne devance que de sept points son équipier Škoda Pontus Tidemand, le tandem ayant remporté sept des neuf manches disputées à ce stade de la saison. Quant au Championnat WRC Junior de la FIA, le suspense est également à son comble à la veille de cette cinquième et dernière manche où pas moins de neuf équipages ont une chance mathématique de décrocher le titre. En effet, avec la possibilité de doubler les points (une première) et le cumul des points obtenus pour chaque victoire de spéciale, il reste encore 67 points à marquer dans cette lutte pour l’un des prix les plus convoités des rallyes mondiaux : le volant d’une Ford Fiesta R5 flambant neuve ainsi qu’une participation offerte à la prochaine saison du Championnat WRC 2. Tous ces équipages sont engagés systématiquement dans le Championnat WRC 3 pour voitures à deux roues motrices de la FIA, Louise Cook venant rejoindre la mêlée.

Trois spéciales seront diffusées en direct à la télévision : l’ES 12 le samedi ainsi que les deux spéciales disputées à Marmaris le dimanche, la deuxième faisant office de Power Stage. Toutes les spéciales seront diffusées en direct sur WRC All Live sur la plateforme WRC+.

ITINERAIRE

LE PARCOURS 2018

Le Rallye de Turquie est l’un des plus compacts du calendrier, 35 % de son parcours étant compétitifs. Jeudi soir, la courte spéciale urbaine organisée au cœur de Marmaris lancera les hostilités pour le retour du Rallye de Turquie après huit ans d’absence dans le Championnat du Monde des Rallyes. Vendredi, les équipages s’affronteront sur terre et mettront le cap au nord-est vers Muğla pour deux boucles identiques de trois spéciales, dont la plus longue de l’épreuve. Le format du samedi sera similaire, mais les concurrents se dirigeront cette fois à l’ouest pour 130 km de spéciales sur une distance totale d’à peine 306 km. Dimanche, quatre spéciales sont prévues au programme, le point culminant étant la Power Stage de Marmaris, dont l’arrivée sera donnée dans le Parc d’assistance d’Asparan.
