Fostering a Culture of Safety: FIA Promotes Road Safety Index In Asia Pacific

21.10.24

FIA Head of Road Safety and Global Advocacy Luca Pascotto joined FIA Members to present the FIA Road Safety Index at  the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) Annual Meeting and Singapore Road Safety Awards and Road Safety Seminar and engage private sector stakeholders in the region.

Established in 2020 by the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank Group, the International Transport Forum, the FIA and UNESCAP with the support of the World Health Organization, the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) serves as the regional forum on road safety data, policies and practices.

This year’s APRSO Annual Meeting, organised with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences (IATSS), hosted speakers  from governments from the Caucasus, South–East and Eastern Asia, as well as leading organisations, including UNICEF and the Asian Development Bank.  FIA Member Clubs the AIP Foundation (Vietnam) and the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) were also in attendance, while the FIA Foundation facilitated a session focused on building partnerships to develop financial opportunities in the road safety sector.

Luca Pascotto contributed to a panel on Private Sector Road Safety Action, alongside Greg Smith (iRAP) and Hiromichi Kano (Bridgestone). The panel covered a wide variety of topics and gave Pascotto the opportunity to explain how the FIA Road Safety Index can act as a game-changer in the region by giving companies a ready-to-use methodology to assess and improve their road safety footprint.

The Index also took centre stage at the Singapore Road Safety Awards and Road Safety Seminar organised by FIA Member the Automobile Association of Singapore (AAS Singapore) and the Singapore Road Safety Council, in the presence of prof. Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Singapore’s Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development.

Luca Pascotto’s presentation at the event touched on the ways that companies can improve their road safety culture and build a safer working environment for their employees. It was part of a wide-ranging programme, which covered everything from Safer Active mobility for All, to fleet management, and engineering safer roads.

As part of the FIA's visit, AA Singapore also organised a dinner debate gathering representatives from the logistics sector and fleet operators to facilitate the deployment of the FIA Road Safety Index in the country.

The FIA Road Safety Index is a groundbreaking tool which allows companies to measure their road safety impact in the same way as they track their carbon footprint. The Index has already achieved recognition from industry leaders and won an NCAP Innovation Award earlier this year. Its global expansion and adoption can play a decisive role in improving road safety worldwide.
