TACI Facilitates Entry for Foreign Travelers with Personal Vehicles in Iran

06.05.24

The Touring and Automobile Club of the Islamic Republic of Iran (TACI) has spearheaded efforts to streamline the entry process for travelers and tourists with personal vehicles into Iran, marking a significant milestone in enhancing travel accessibility.

Iran's commitment to the Convention on Road Traffic (Vienna, 8 November 1968) since May 21, 1976, underscores its dedication to international road travel standards.

Previously, foreign motor vehicles entering Iran were required to obtain Iranian Registration Number Plates, posing challenges for travelers and tourists due to technicalities and unfamiliarity.

However, as of March 2024, foreign vehicles are permitted temporary entry with their original registration plates (in Latin numerals and letters), provided they possess a Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) or alternative means of guarantee.

This progressive adjustment, facilitated by the collaboration between TACI and the Iranian Traffic Police, marks a pivotal moment in simplifying the temporary entry process for private and commercial vehicles, benefiting all travelers to Iran.

ABOUT THE CARNET DE PASSAGES EN DOUANE (CPD)

The Carnet de Passages en Douane, or CPD is a customs facilitation document used to cover the temporary importation of road motor vehicles, whether it is driven or shipped to another country. The authentic CPD (or “trip ticket”) can only be issued by members of the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) and Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in strict accordance with the terms of the United Nations Customs Convention of 1954 and 1956.
