The FIA last night inaugurated the new FIA Hall of Fame in Paris with nine FIA Formula One World Champions in attendance as all 33 winners of motor sport’s most prestigious title were honoured by the sport’s regulator.

In association with official partners Michelin and Rolex, the FIA Hall of Fame was launched at a glittering ceremony at the headquarters of the ACF in Paris, with champions Sir Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg joining representatives and family of F1’s other title winners in becoming the first drivers honoured by the new initiative.

FIA President Jean Todt said: “The FIA Hall of Fame has been created to highlight the values that run through motor sport and the champions who have been and who still are the exemplars of the FIA’s values of commitment, integrity, respect and sportsmanship.This is the first stage of an ambitious project: the FIA Hall of Fame will soon expand to the FIA headquarters in Geneva, and other champions and other disciplines will be in the spotlight in the coming years. In this way we will celebrate all the FIA champions who have made, and who still make the history of motor sport so incredibly rich and inspiring.”

The inaugural ceremony, held in the library of the ACF, where Formula One’s regulations were first drafted in the 1940s, first inducted the 17 champions with single titles to their name, starting with Formula One’s first champion, 1950 winner Giuseppe Farina and ending with 2016 champion Nico Rosberg.

Among that group was 1992 champion Nigel Mansell, who said: “I’d like to thank the FIA for making this evening possible for all of us. It’s such a special evening. I’d also like to congratulate all the other drivers here, truly they are all tremendous.”

Damon Hill, who in 1996 followed in the footsteps of his double title winning father Graham, added: “It was always very difficult to get it through my head that I’d become a world champion at all, so the thrill continues, and it just an amazing honour to be included. You see the people who are here and the names mentioned – Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Sir Jackie Stewart and it’s hard to believe I’m in the same gang. So, congratulations to the FIA for instigating the Hall of Fame and thank your for including me.”

The ceremony then celebrated two- and three-time champions, including 2005 and 2006 winner Fernando Alonso who commented: “It has been a fantastic night. I’m very honoured to be here with these great champions. All of them inspired me to become a Formula One driver, they inspired all the kids of my generation, so I feel very proud.”

Alonso, who this year raced at the Indianapolis 500 and who will contest the 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race in 2018, added: I’m trying other series now and trying to imitate some of the idols I had when I was a kid. The Indy 500 experience this year, maybe Le Mans in the future. President Todt mentioned that the Hall of Fame for endurance racing will be in 2019, so I have two years!”

The Renault R25 driven to title glory by Alonso in 2005 was displayed  outside the FIA headquarters along with the Alfa Romeo 158 of Nino Farina; the Ferrari 156 of Phil Hill; the Lotus Climax 25 of Jim Clark; the McLaren MP4/5 of Ayrton Senna, and the Ferrari F1-2000 of Michael Schumacher. 

After honouring three-time winners such as F1 legends Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Jack Brabham, the evening moved to the sport’s most successful drivers, beginning with the induction of four-time champions Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton and then five-time winner Juan Manuel Fangio.

Of the evening, 2010-2013 winner Vettel said: “It’s been incredible to see all these names, all these faces. Obviously a lot of them I only know from what I have read, what I have seen, but I think it’s a great idea. There’s so much history in the sports, it’s still so alive, and thanks to events like tonight’s, we’ll keep it like that. I love racing but as you get older you change your way of thinking and I think your appreciation for things and definitely for things like tonight grows.”

Finally, the sport’s most successful competitor, seven-star driver Michael Schumacher, was inducted, with long-time manager Sabine Kehm on hand to accept his award.

“We all know Michael should be here and I am totally sure he would love to be here,” she said. “He always had the highest respect for everyone in this room and he would be very honoured. What made Michael so special, what made him so successful was, as with everybody in this room, a love and passion for this sport.”

The inauguration also saw the launch of the FIA Hall of Fame website, where the achievements of those inducted will be celebrated in order to help inspire the legends of the future.

The FIA Hall of Fame gallery in Paris has been created by Wilmotte and Associates, a prominent global architecture firm headquartered in France, and will be open to the public upon reservation. Details will be available on the FIA Hall of Fame website.

The launch of the FIA of Hall of Fame has been supported from the start by official partners Michelin and Rolex. Both brands are also involved with the FIA’s flagship Championships, from the FIA Formula One Championship (Rolex) to the FIA World Rally Championship, the FIA World Endurance Championship and the FIA Formula E Championship (Michelin). LES CHAMPIONS DE F1 REUNIS A PARIS POUR L’INAUGURATION DU HALL OF FAME DE LA FIA

La FIA a inauguré hier soir à Paris son Hall of Fame en présence de neuf des trente-trois Champions du Monde de l’histoire de la Formule Un auxquels la fédération rendait hommage.

En association avec les partenaires officiels Michelin et Rolex, le lancement du Hall of Fame de la FIA a eu lieu lors d’une cérémonie prestigieuse organisée dans les salons de l’Automobile Club de France (ACF) à Paris. Les champions Sir Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel et Nico Rosberg avaient rejoint les représentants et les familles d’autres vainqueurs de la F1 pour être les premiers pilotes consacrés par cette initiative.

Le Président de la FIA Jean Todt a déclaré : "Le Hall of Fame de la FIA met en avant les valeurs du sport automobile ainsi que tous les champions qui ont incarné et incarnent encore les valeurs de la FIA : engagement, intégrité, respect et esprit sportif. Il s’agit de la première étape d’un projet ambitieux : ce Hall of Fame sera bientôt installé également au siège de la FIA à Genève et, après la Formule Un, ce sont d’autres champions et disciplines qui seront à l’honneur dans les années à venir. Nous célèbrerons de la même manière tous les champions de la FIA qui ont rendu et rendent encore l’histoire du sport si incroyablement riche et inspirante."

La cérémonie inaugurale, qui se déroulait dans la bibliothèque de l’ACF, à l’endroit-même où les premiers règlements de Formule Un étaient rédigés dans les années 1940, a d’abord intronisé les 17 champions tenants d’un seul titre, en commençant par le tout premier champion de Formule Un Giuseppe Farina, vainqueur en 1950, pour terminer par le champion 2016 Nico Rosberg.

Le champion de 1992 Nigel Mansell a déclaré : "Je voudrais remercier la FIA de nous permettre de vivre cette soirée. C’est un moment si particulier. Je tiens aussi à féliciter les autres pilotes qui sont vraiment tous extraordinaires."

Damon Hill, qui en 1996 suivait les traces de son père Graham, deux fois champion, a ajouté : "J’ai toujours eu beaucoup de mal à réaliser que j’étais champion du monde, l’émotion est toujours aussi forte, et c’est un grand honneur d’être ici. Quand on voit les personnes présentes et les noms cités – Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost et Sir Jackie Stewart – c’est difficile de croire qu’on fait partie de la même bande. Donc bravo à la FIA pour ce Hall of Fame et merci de m’avoir permis d’y figurer !"

La cérémonie a célébré ensuite les doubles et triples champions, dont le vainqueur 2005 et 2006 Fernando Alonso : "C’est une soirée fantastique. Je suis très honoré d’être ici aux côtés de tous ces grands champions. Tous m’ont donné envie de devenir pilote de Formule Un, ils ont fait rêver les jeunes de ma génération, je me sens très fier."

Alonso, qui a couru cette année l’Indianapolis 500 et qui disputera les 24 Heures de Daytona en 2018, a ajouté : "J’aborde d’autres séries maintenant et j’essaie de faire aussi bien que les idoles de mon enfance. L’Indy 500 cette année, peut-être Le Mans prochainement. Le Président Todt a déclaré que le Hall of Fame des courses d’endurance est prévu pour 2019, j’ai donc deux années devant moi !"

Après un hommage rendu aux triples vainqueurs tels que les légendes de la F1 Sir Jackie Stewart et Sir Jack Brabham, la soirée a consacré les pilotes les plus titrés de la discipline, d’abord les quadruples champions Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel et Lewis Hamilton puis le quintuple vainqueur Juan Manuel Fangio.

Invité à commenter l’événement, le champion 2010-2013 Sebastian Vettel a déclaré : "C’est incroyable de voir tous ces noms, tous ces visages. Evidemment, je ne connais la plupart qu’à travers ce que j’en ai lu, ou vu, mais l’idée est excellente. Il y a tant d’histoires différentes dans le sport, c’est toujours si vivant, et c’est grâce à des soirées comme celle-ci que ça pourra continuer ainsi. J’adore les courses mais avec le temps on voit les choses autrement et je pense qu’on apprécie d’autant plus ce genre de célébration."

Enfin, le pilote le plus couronné de l’histoire de la F1, le septuple champion du monde Michael Schumacher, a reçu un prix que son attachée de presse de longue date Sabine Kehm était venue chercher en son nom.

"Nous savons tous que Michael devrait être ici parmi nous et je suis certaine qu’il en serait très heureux", a-t-elle affirmé. "Il a toujours eu le plus grand respect pour tous ceux qui sont présents dans cette salle et il serait très honoré. Ce qui a fait de Michael un être unique, ce qui lui a valu tous ses succès c’est, comme pour chacun dans cette salle, l’amour et la passion pour ce sport."

L’inauguration s’est accompagnée du lancement du site web dédié au Hall of Fame de la FIA, qui mettra en lumière les exploits de tous les champions récompensés afin d’inspirer les légendes de demain.

La galerie du Hall of Fame de la FIA à Paris a été conçue par Wilmotte & Associés, célèbre agence d’architecture mondiale ayant son siège en France, et sera ouverte au public sur réservation. De plus amples détails seront communiqués sur le site web du Hall of Fame de la FIA.

Le lancement du Hall of Fame de la FIA a été soutenu depuis le premier jour par les partenaires officiels Michelin et Rolex. Ces deux marques sont également impliquées dans les championnats phares de la FIA, du Championnat du Monde de Formule Un de la FIA (Rolex) aux Championnat du Monde des Rallyes de la FIA, Championnat du Monde d’Endurance de la FIA et Championnat de Formule E de la FIA (Michelin).
