Jean Todt & FIA Club Presidents from Central America for Road Safety

Between the 4th and 11th of August 2017 FIA President Jean Todt travelled throughout Central America to meet with FIA Club presidents and promote road safety.

During his visit to Central America between the 4th and 11th of August 2017, Jean Todt visited Puerto Rico, Barbados, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Belize. Within each of these countries Mr. Todt met with the respective Presidents of the FIA Member Clubs and United Nations representatives to promote road safety, and to receive an update on the road safety initiatives which were being carried out and planned in each country.

Mr. Todt expressed his support for the initiatives being carried out in the Central American region: “It is through our local FIA Member Clubs that we are able to translate the global vision of safer roads for all into concrete local actions. FIA Clubs have taken this vision and tailored campaigns specific to the region to ensure that our messaging is both meaningful and impactful.”

Throughout the trip, Mr. Todt met with the following club presidents:

  • Mr. Hugo Berrera, President, Automóvil Club de El Salvador
  • Mr. Luis Burgos, President, Federacion de Automóvilismo de Puerto Rico
  • Mr. Daniel Coen, President, Automóvil Club de Costa Rica,
  • Mr. Andrea Mallalieu, President, Barbados Motoring Federation
  • Mr. Grant Millensted, President, Belize Automobile Club

In Barbados, Mr. Todt met with leading officials, including Prime Minister of Barbados, the Hon. Freundel Stuart (Chair of Barbados National Road Safety Council), Minister of Transport and Works, the Hon. Michael Lashley, Minister of Health, the Hon. John Boyce and the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Stephen O’Malley, to discuss the road safety challenge in the country.

In El Salvador, Mr. Todt also promoted the ongoing Global #3500Lives Road Safety campaign where 13 global celebrities from the worlds of art (Michelle Yeoh and Pharrell Williams), motor racing (Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Marc Marquez, and Felipe Massa), sport (Rafael Nadal, Yohan Blake, Wayde van Niekerk, Vanessa Low and Haile Gebrselassie), and politics (Anne Hidalgo) deliver messages showcasing the FIA’s “10 Golden Rules” for safe motoring.

At the end of 2017, the campaign will have been translated in to 30 languages, and been on display across more than 900 cities in 80 countries, making it the world’s largest campaign dedicated to road safety.
