1. Why did the FIA seek to join the IOC?
The FIA is one of the world’s largest sporting federations and as such is proud of being part of the international sporting community. The International Olympic Committee is the ultimate expression of this sporting community and the FIA actively shares the Olympic values of Respect, Excellence and Friendship. The recognition by the IOC is an acknowledgment of the sporting and educational role of the FIA excercised at federation level as well as thought the motorsport clubs worldwide.
2. How will being part of the IOC affect the FIA?
The FIA is obliged to respect the Olympic Charter. It also has the following rights and obligations:
- To formulate proposals addressed to the IOC concerning the Olympic Charter and the Olympic Movement;
- To collaborate in the preparation of Olympic Congresses
- To participate, if requested by the IOC, in the activities of the IOC Commissions;
- The status of observer at the meetings of the IOC Executive Board;
- Request the IOC to grant its patronage to one or more motorsports events;
- The possibility of being recognised by the National Olympic Committees, at their sole discretion
3. How will this affect the individual clubs of the FIA worldwide?
A joint approach by the FIA and the motorsport clubs must be made to the National Olympic Committees (NOC), on the basis of the Olympic Charter, to enable the clubs to benefit from the conditions attached to the status of member of a national Olympic committee.
NOCs exist in various countries of the world. Their mission is to develop, promote and protect the Olympic Movement in their respective countries, in accordance with the Olympic Charter.
These are the possible benefits for motorsport clubs:
- international recognition by the Olympic Movement,
- organise and coordinate initiatives locally and nationally
- exchange information and network with other national sports associations.
4. Has Motorsport ever been at the Olympics?
It was a demonstration sport in the Paris Olympics in1900, while in London, in 1908, there were three motorboat racing events. Since then motorsports have not featured in the Olympic Games.
5. Will there be motorsport at the London Olympics?No. The Olympic Charter specifically bans sports with an element of motorization from eligibility.
6. Will joining the IOC in any way affect the 2012 motorsport season? Nothing will change from a technical viewpoint.
7. Does this mean drivers will have to be drug-tested?
They are already tested. The FIA is signatory of the Word Anti-Doping Code.
8. Can individual teams become affiliated to the IOC?
No, they cannot
9. Will joining the IOC affect sponsorship in any way, regarding alcohol for example?
No.
10. The IOC recognition is temporary over two years: why?
The IOC has granted Olympic recognition on the understanding that the FIA set up an Athletes’ Commission within the next two years.
Therefore a meeting is scheduled with the IOC for January 26 to prepare the setting-up of an Athletes’ Commission which will be made up by professional and amateur drivers.
Once this is done to the IOC’s satisfaction, the recognition of the FIA will become permanent.
